The 2018 Annual Conference - 'Unique Child Unique Curriculum'

On the 4th September 2018, Consortium MAT proudly held their 2nd conference at Rendlesham Primary School focussing on the unique nature of every child, with Teachers and Teaching Support Staff attending from all of the Trust's member and proposed schools.

Guests were captured by the keynote speech from inspirational and motivational 'iCAN' speaker Richard McCann, whose story of overcoming adversity, and sharing his powerful iCan approach, inspired listeners to embed an 'iCAN' culture across our Trust, empowering both staff and importantly, our pupils.

Richard shared his story of being brought up on the at-risk register and living in poverty before tragically losing his mother a week before his 6th birthday at the hands of the serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, and the tragic aftermath that ensued.  Richard recognises the encouragement of his English Teacher Mr Hill, who he met aged 12 and the seed of belief which remained with him through the difficult years of his youth.

After a period of dabbling with drugs and a prison sentence, Richard decided to turn his life around.  His book, Just a Boy has sold almost 1/2 million copies in the UK, after which he began to be asked to share his powerful story personally.  Richard has grown to become a hugely successful motivational speaker and loving family man, with a film of his life in development. Today, Richard has delivered over 2,000 presentations around the world, inspiring audiences with his story of overcoming adversity, and sharing his powerful iCan approach.

Richard's story shows just what can happen when a young person receives encouragement, is given an opportunity and the realisation that skills can be learnt, regardless of their personal circumstances or background.  Feedback from Richard's speech from our staff and guests clearly show the depth of emotion and inspiration they received:-

  • Richard McCann was truly amazing – thank you for organising the whole day.
  • Started the day fantastically - If anyone can make you laugh and cry in the same breath – he can! It made me think carefully about what I can do and what the children at our school can be encouraged to do.  Although there are a lot of pressures for all children to achieve academically, we can draw on other areas of their development.
  • Best inspirational speaker yet! Well done.
  • Amazing – his message will stay with me.
  • Excellent impact! Wonderful

The day progressed with workshops from Jeremy Spencer, Senior HMI Inspector and Daniel Sobel, CEO Inclusion Expert and others, covering a wide range of curriculum areas, including specialist and therapeutic support.  The Trust's central PE & ODL Team offered 'break out' activities to staff on the school field, including archery and fencing.

Regional School’s Commissioner Sue Baldwin spoke to the team and delivered a strong message around ensuring that all our schools need to rated ‘good’ to enable us to continue to nurture every child and enable them to achieve their full potential.

Workshops were delivered throughout the day on subjects such as Ofsted’s view of a broad and balanced curriculum which was delivered by Jeremy Spencer SHMI and John Lucas, HMI.  Inclusion expert Daniel Sobel attended and Gracie Wright joined us and showed us how to break down barriers with the art of story telling.

Our colleagues also hosted workshops such as Maths Mastery with Fred Stocker, our EYFS HoS Caroline Rankin delivered a workshop to colleagues on communicating with new parents and Danielle Shipp revealed how resources from the curiosity shop can inspire creative writing.

We were also joined by colleagues from the industry and would like to thank the following for attending: The Scouts Association, Gemstones, One Life, Proactive, Pengaton Play, Bells Croft Consultancy, Opus Teach & Miss Wright Publishing Ltd.
